Dos and Don'ts to Ace the CELPIP Speaking Exam


Worried that your speaking skills are not sharp enough to secure your grade goal? Don’t be. There’s still time to hone your linguistic abilities. Maximize what’s left of your CELPIP preparation exam period.

Get to know the speaking sub-test. Familiarize yourself with its demands and task types. Determine your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to verbal communication. Develop strategies that play up to the former and work on overcoming the latter. Consider the following dos and don’ts during your CELPIP training to enhance your test performance and raise your chances of success.


CELPIP preparation exam

       ·        DO address all the prompts.

Read the instructions. Establish the time limit and the task prompts. Use the preparation time to brainstorm and outline your ideas for discussion. Make sure your response addresses all the task prompts adequately. Otherwise, you’ll lower your speaking results.

       ·        DO ensure your answers cater to the scoring criteria.
The CELPIP speaking test is graded based on the following criteria.

1.    Content/Coherence
Includes:
ü  quantity of ideas
ü  quality of ideas
ü  organization of ideas
ü  supporting details and examples

2.    Vocabulary
Includes:
ü  word choice
ü  accuracy and precision
ü  range of words and phrases
ü  suitability of words and phrases used

3.    Task Fulfillment
Includes:
ü  tone
ü  length
ü  relevance
ü  completeness

4.    Listenability
Includes:
ü  grammar and sentence structure
ü  variety of sentence structure
ü  rhythm, intonation, and pronunciation
ü  pauses, interjections, and self-corrections

o   Provide complete answers.
o   Expound your key points.
o   Ensure your speech has an introduction, body, and conclusion.
o   Don’t ramble or go off-topic.
o   Maximize the allotted time for each prompt.
o   Speak clearly.
o   Be mindful of your pronunciation.
o   Ensure appropriate intonation
o   Don’t speak monotonously.

       ·        DON’T be redundant.

Don’t bother structuring your response introduction after the task prompt or question. Go straight to the point and deliver your answers. Avoid repeating words and phrases. Need to reiterate a point? Paraphrase it or use synonyms. It’ll help you demonstrate your mastery of the language. Keep these in mind when you practice your speaking skills during your CELPIP training.

       ·        DON’T be hasty.

Before the exam begins, you’ll be given the chance to test the microphone and find out how your voice would sound in the recording. Make the most out of this opportunity. Determine the best tone, pace, and volume to use when you deliver your response. Pace yourself when you talk. Make sure you enunciate your answers well.
