Do you want to
boost your chances of achieving your CELPIP grade goals? Hone your test
strategies. Have a set approach for each task type that you’ll encounter during
the exam.
Below is a list
of the most common test types in English proficiency tests and some tips on how
to tackle them. Consider them during your CELPIP review. If you want to learn
about all the task types included in the high-stakes exam, enroll in an
excellent CELPIP preparation course.
Short Answer Questions
As
the name implies, these questions require short answers. They sometimes come
with a word count requirement. Otherwise, your answer can be as long as a
couple of words or a paragraph. When answering this type of question:
o
Plan your answer. Make sure it addresses the question
adequately. If there’s a word count requirement, ensure your response complies with
it.
o
Keep it simple and concise. There’s no need to rewrite the
question. Simply answer it, and you’re done.
o
Proofread your response. Unless the question requires
single-word or phrasal answers, it’s best to assume that grammar has an impact
on your score. So, proofread your responses.
Multiple-Choice Questions
Never
underestimate multiple-choice questions. Sure, they’re often easier compared with
task types that offer no options. However, that doesn’t mean that they raise no
challenges. Multiple-choice questions are typically made up of a question or a
stem (the first half of a sentence) followed by several options to answer or
complete it respectively. When answering this type of question during your CELPIP review center classes:
o
Use the process of elimination. Disregard the choices that are
obviously incorrect. It’ll raise your chances of picking the correct one if
you’re not sure of the answer.
o
Be careful of negatives. They can completely change a question or
statement. For example, “Based on the anecdote, Hank doesn’t mind…?”
o
Double-check your answer. Make sure it addresses the question
adequately or completes the provided statement.
Matching Type Questions
This
task type is simple. It involves matching a concept or statement to a list of
choices. The provided options can exceed the number of questions. When
answering this type of question:
o
Read all the options first. Don’t start matching until you’ve read
all your choices. It’ll help you locate matches faster.
o
Start with the ones that you can
confidently answer.
It’ll help you narrow down your options later.
o
Place a small mark beside the options
you’ve already used. It’ll
help you keep track which ones still don’t have a match.
Essay Tasks
Essay-writing
tasks are always a part of English proficiency exams. They require structured
and extensive responses. When answering this task type:
o
Consider the word count requirement. Make sure you don’t go over or under
them to avoid wasting time and getting score deductions.
o
Outline your essay. It has to have an introduction, a body,
and a conclusion. Organize your ideas to guarantee logical transition.
o
Proofread your work. Reread your essay before moving on to
the next task. Keep an eye out for content and grammar errors.
