Simply sharpening your
reading skills won’t guarantee high marks in the second part of the CELPIP
exam. You need to familiarize yourself with the reading test’s format and
coverage as well. Study its task types. Then, come up with an approach for each
one.
Enrolling in a CELPIP preparation program is probably the best way to
get to know the exam. CELPIP instructors are CELPIP experts after all. They can teach you everything you need to
know to ace the exam. But, don’t confine your review efforts to your training
course. Complement your review with the following dos and don’ts to supercharge
your CELPIP reading performance.

DO
practice your reading skills.
If
you’re reviewing with a CELPIP preparation course,
don’t confine your reading materials to those provided by your program. Read a
variety of texts. Read books, newspapers, magazines, web articles, and more.
Then, whenever you encounter an unfamiliar word or phrase, try to figure out
its meaning on your own. Use a dictionary only to check if your guess is
correct. Doing so will help you improve your ability to infer—a skill essential
to CELPIP reading success.

DO
check your answers.
Once
you’ve moved on to the next item, you can’t go back and change your answer. So,
double-check everything. Make sure you picked the right option before moving on
to the next part of the exam.

DON’T
memorize the text.
CELPIP
is an English proficiency test, not a memory exam. You don’t need to retain the
information of one section for another part of the exam. Focus on getting the
gist of the passage. Establish its context, identify implied information, and
understand its various points. Prepare with a CELPIP
preparation program to hone your reading comprehension skills
specifically for the high-stakes exam.

DON’T
underestimate the reading test.
The
reading exam is anything but a no-brainer. It tests your reading comprehension
in ways that progressively get more difficult as you move forward the exam. In
some sections, you’ll be required to pinpoint implied information. There are
tasks that you won’t be able to accomplish without an extensive English
vocabulary. So, don’t underestimate the reading test. Enroll in a CELPIP preparation course to find out what other
skills are essential to ace this sub-test.

DON’T
leave an item unanswered.
You
won’t be penalized for incorrect responses in the reading exam. You simply
won’t get a mark. So, never leave a question unanswered. If you can’t settle on
an option, use the process of elimination and guess the correct answer.
