CELPIP Speaking Task 7: Expressing Opinions
For this
speaking task, you will be asked a question about a social issue related to
Canadian contexts. Your task is to answer the question by providing logical
reasons so that the listener can follow your line of arguments. You have 30
seconds to prepare for your response and 90 seconds to record your answers. You
can only record your response once. This speaking task measures your ability to
analyze a specific issue and to express your opinion about it.
Task 7 –
Expressing Opinions is one of the most challenging components of the CELPIP
Speaking Test. As a test taker, it is practical to look for a superb
test-taking strategy that can help boost your CELPIP preparation exam and ace this speaking task. To help you achieve this,
below are top tips that you can apply during the CELPIP Speaking Test.
Top Tips for CELPIP Speaking Task 7
If you want to
get a high band score in this speaking task, read and follow these top three tips
for the Speaking Task 7 – Expressing Opinions:
1. Examine
the question
Since you have
30 seconds of preparation time, use it to examine the question. Write down
critical points about the question. Doing this enables you to determine the
main idea of the question.
2. Organize
your response
When organizing
your response, consider the following points:

Use
a note-taking tip to organize your response. During your CELPIP preparation exam, look for a great note-taking
strategy that you can use during the test.
·
State
your opinion clearly in the first sentence. Use phrases like “In my opinion, I
think …,” “I strongly believe that …,” or “Personally speaking, I think …”
·
List
down at least three strong points to support your opinion. Use some linking
words, such as “moreover,” furthermore,” and “finally.”
·
Don’t
forget to write a conclusion about your response.
3. Speak
clearly
During the
90-minute recording time, speak in a friendly rational tone and state your
answers clearly. To guide you more, check out these reminders when recording
your answer:

Start
your response by stating your opinion.
·
Present
the three strong points you have prepared.
·
End
your recording by expounding your conclusion clearly.
One final reminder: Keep in mind that there is no right or wrong answer, but
you must state the opinion that you can easily justify.
